Happy Halloween

FamHalloweenLast minute I wanted us to have matching Halloween costumes so I ordered Layla a little bunny and the hubs a carrot costume.  At first the hubs wasn’t too excited to dress up as a carrot but he got so many compliments while we were trick-o-treating he ended up loving it ;-)! Hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween!

No More K Cups

I just saw this interesting post on Facebook from another blog (The Mommy Illuminati) about K-Cups and their potential danger to our health. So many of us, including myself, drink our morning coffee from the quick and easy K Cups but looks like those days must come to an end. We’ve all heard about the dangers of chemicals released from heated plastic, but it never crossed my mind that each time I use my Keurig I am heating the plastic K-cup with boiling water.

When I found out I was pregnant, I made a point to cut down my use of plastic products to decrease my risk of exposure to BPA. I got rid of all my plastic containers and bottles, replacing everything with glass. Looks like I’ll be getting rid of my Keurig now :-(. For all those mammas or mammas-to-be, start brewing your coffee fresh. If you do not want to get rid of your Keurig, you can get a reusable stainless steel K-cup. Another alternative to your quick morning coffee is using a french press or a single serve coffee maker.

Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day!!!photo

I got this fun picture idea off Pinterest…I had actually pinned the idea way before I was pregnant but thought it was so cute! Note to self…it is very hard to get a 3 month old to look at the camera, not smear lipstick everywhere and smile at the same time. Hence our picture did not turn out exactly like we had planned but cute enough! The red lipstick was very hard to get off. I gave her a bath right after and used baby wipes but it took one more bath to get all the residual lipstick off. Baby oil would have probably helped remove it better but I didn’t have any. Did any of you take cute pics of your kiddos for Valentines day??!?!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas! We had professional newborn pictures taken when Layla was 12 days old. I can’t believe we were able to get this photo! So excited about the way it turned out. XOXO

She’s Finally Here!!!

layla1Our love bug is finally here! I can’t believe it after 10 months of having her inside me she is now in my arms. It has truly been a surreal experience. Our little one caught us by a small surprise and decided to arrive one day prior to my scheduled C-section. On Sunday night (38 4/7 weeks), I started feeling a bit more uncomfortable, having menstrual like cramps and nausea, but didn’t think much of it.  The following morning, at 38 5/7 weeks, I went to my fetal monitoring appointment. During the monitoring I was having some frequent contractions, but they were not painful, just uncomfortable. The nurse checked my amniotic fluid index (fluid around the baby) and it was lower than it had been last week, however, given I was scheduled for a C-section in two days, the nurse told me to go home, rest and to drink plenty of fluids. If my contractions got stronger, I needed to go to the hospital. I knew I had to rest, but I also had a million errands to finish so I had my mom pick me up and we went to the mall to get some last minute things (ie a nursing bra) and then I was supposed to meet my friend at the nail salon at 6PM to get my nails done (a girl has to have nice nails when her baby is born :-)). At 5PM while walking in the mall, the doctor from fetal monitoring called saying that I need to go to the hospital tonight. He had looked over the fetal heart strip and noted that my babies heart rate was varying too much with my contractions and my contractions were quite frequent so I needed to have further monitoring and possibly deliver the baby that evening. After some conversation back and forth with the physician, I bought myself 3 hours before having to go to the hospital. So what did I do….I went to the nail salon. It may sound stupid to most, but I know my body and knew that my contractions were not strong enough yet to risk having the baby soon. I met my friend a little earlier at the salon, frantically got my nails done, ran home and packed the last few things of the hospital bags and headed to the hospital. My parents and some of our closest friends met us at the hospital. They hooked me up to the monitor and we spent the night with close monitoring of our babies heart with my contractions. I really wanted to make it through the night without delivering her because my doctor was not on call until the following morning. Thankfully my contractions stayed well spaced out and our babies heart rate was not effected with the contractions overnight.  First thing in the morning my doctor came and we were off to deliver our little one. The actual c-section went by super fast and before we knew it we had our little Layla in our arms. Holding her for the first time was the most unbelievable feeling. I just remember thinking to myself I can’t believe she is finally here. After 10 months of wondering what she will look like, how she will smell and feel, she was finally in our arms and absolutely perfect! I cannot wait to continue to share my journey of motherhood with you all and I’ll be referring back a lot to my pregnancy and putting up more posts now that I am on maternity leave for 3 months!!!

Baby Shower Invites

I never realized how difficult it can be to choose a baby shower invite! Or maybe its not that hard for most peps, but the running theme during my pregnancy has been being indecisive…whether I am trying to find a baby shower theme or decide what to have for dinner…making decisions has been my weakness lately!

Some hints for ordering shower invites:
1. Make sure your registry is done in advance so you can include the store(s) on your invite.
2. Start making your invite list early so you do not leave anyone off. I made an excel sheet with different columns for invite sent, RSVP, gift and thank you cards. This way I could stay organized before and after the shower. See attachment for my baby shower invite sheet.
3. Decide on a baby shower theme about 2 months before in case you want your invites to flow with your theme.
4. Invites should be mailed out anywhere from 4-6 weeks before your shower

As far as buying invites, you can get premade invites from anywhere like Target, Michaels, etc. Or save yourself a trip to the store and purchase online. Several websites have hundreds of designs you can choose from. Personally I feel like the web has so much more to offer, so my mom and I hit the internet for our search. I never realized how many options there are. We found some templates on Etsy that we loved. Our seller let us customize the invite to make it more personal and to fit the theme of my shower. After we placed our order, we had the PDF in less than 48 hours. Then we had them printed at a local print shop and I ordered envelops from Amazon. Sounds complicated, but we found that printing the invites and getting our own envelopes came out to be a lot cheaper than having a customized invite printed from Etsy. Other sites had cheaper options, but we liked the template on Etsy so we went that route instead.

New Years Resolution…Getting Healthy

chipsaladLike most people, one of my new years resolutions was to eat healthier. Unfortunately, I love to eat out!!! Everything just tastes so much better when someone else makes it, right?!?! With that being said, you have no control over what goes in your food when you eat out. So my solution is to take baby steps…with my lifestyle I cannot completely give up eating out so I am going to try to make healthier choices. For example, today for lunch I went to Chipotle. I love Chiptole because you get to choose what goes in your meal and all of their ingredients are fresh. I got the burrito bowl which allows me to cut out the tortilla and choose the ingredients that go inside basically my salad. I opted for brown rice over the white rice (smaller portion) for my carbohydrate portion, black beans and barbacoa (half of the portion size) for my protein and then loaded up on lettuce, corn salsa and pico de gallo salsa. I love to get guacamole and salsa on the side so I can add to my meal for taste. It’s a great replacement for salad dressing which can have a couple hundred calories in each serving.

I’ll keep you posted on healthy meal options as they come up. What are your healthy meal choices??? Please share them with all of us!!! Cheers to a healthy 2013!!
