23 weeks…Some fun with a little scare!!

Time is flying by! I can’t believe I’m already 23 weeks along!!! This week was filled with some fun get-togethers with old friends and family, but also a small health scare. About two years ago I was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia called paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, which basically means every now and then my heart beats at an irregular rate. Because of this underlying condition, from the start of my pregnancy was being followed by a high risk OB, also known as Maternal Fetal Medicine physician. They were monitoring me and the plan was for me to just take my medications as needed in hopes of avoiding medication during pregnancy. But things changed yesterday. While I was taking a nice stroll to the local Starbucks during my work break, I started to feel my heart racing, sweating profusely and felt lightheaded…unfortunately all part of what happens when one of the episodes kick in. Thankfully one of my besties that’s also a physician was with and got me back to the clinic so that I could get my medication ASAP and some medical attention. Thank goodness after a few doctor visits and ultrasounds, everything is still going well with the pregnancy and out little one is growing perfectly! The downside is now I have to have closer monitoring for the duration of my pregnancy from my regular OB, high risk doctor and cardiologist…talk about trying to fit all those doctor appointments in! Also now I have to take my medication daily to help keep my heart rate regular. Hopefully things will stay in tune for the duration of the pregnancy.

I’m sharing this because I think it’s a good eye opener that not everything goes as planned during your pregnancy. I really did not want to have to take medication daily, but if its for the health of my little one I’ll do anything I have to. If your doctor needs to start you on medication for any medical reason throughout your pregnancy, make sure to do your research and ask all of your questions. There are lots of medications that are safe in pregnancy as long as you have close monitoring. Hope your pregnancy is going well! Enjoy every second of it….it flies by so fast!

Pregnancy Cravings

What are you craving these days in your pregnancy??? My obsession with sweets continues. I feel like its getting a bit out of control, however to my defense this last week was my vacation week so I had a lot of lunch dates and our mini trip so lots of access to ice cream and desserts!!! I finally got my hands on some Sprinkles Ice Cream yesterday…absolutely delish!!! If you haven’t heard of Sprinkles, it’s a gourmet cupcake shop that turned in to a fad throughout So-Cal. They just recently  opened an ice cream branch where they put a scoop of ice cream in the middle of your cupcake! What more could a pregos girl ask for!!! If you haven’t tried this and have a Sprinkles near you, I highly recommend it! sprinkles

 

Babymoon!!!

People take a honeymoon after their wedding to relax away all the stresses of planning a wedding. Well a babymoon is similar but in reverse order. It’s a trip to take with your partner before the little one arrives and your days of relaxing are replaced with feedings and diaper changes! It’s also a nice period of time to get away alone together and bond before you meet your little one. For most, it’s hard to take a good chunk of time off for a babymoon, knowing you have to take maternity/paternity leave once the baby arrives. Don’t feel you have to plan an extravagant two week European getaway. Plan something small that fits in your schedule. Take a road trip to a city/town near you that you usually do not have the time to enjoy. If you live in a fun area, but are always overwhelmed with the daily activities of life, consider as “staycation” and reserve a hotel for a few nights in your hometown and just be a tourist there! You may think it’s dumb to waste money when you have your home (that you already pay rent or a mortgage for), but with your house comes nursery and life planning. Get away from it all, even if its for a night or two. Later in your second trimester, early third trimester is the best time for a little escape. At that point you are not too big to feel uncomfortable, but just in time for a little break before your baby arrives. Whether it’s for a day or a week, make sure to put some time aside for you are your partner. I promise you you’ll be thankful later!

My husband and I ended up taking our babymoon a little earlier in my second trimester. We went when I was 16 weeks because my schedule is super hectic right now at work. I’m trying to get as much work out of the way before our little one arrives so that I can take a longer maternity leave, so for us it made more sense to go earlier than risk not being able to get away later in the pregnancy. We decided to stay relatively local and went away to Santa Barbara for four nights. It was just enough distance to feel like we are really getting away and with four nights, it felt more than just a weekend getaway! Maybe we will be able to sneak in one more short babymoon before the end of the pregnancy…fingers crossed!

20 weeks pregos!

20weekUSHow far along? 20 weeks and 4 days (OVER HALF WAY!!!)
Total weight gain/loss: Up one pound from my pregnancy weight, so total weight gain 9 pounds
Maternity clothes? Desperately need maternity pants…goal of this week after work!
Sleep: Same as last week…frequent midnight pee breaks!
Best moment this week: Feeling booger wiggle around more and registering for all the fun new things we need. I feel like finally registering is making things more real
Miss Anything? Still missing my clothes and a nice glass of wine. We went to a BBQ last night and they were having a nice rare piece of tri-tip…kinda wanted that but it was offset with a nice slice of carrot cake!
Food cravings: The sweets obsession continues

Looking forward to:  Planning my baby shower with my mom and friends. We confirmed the location yesterday so now only fun stuff like games and decorations are left. Now I need to choose a theme and invites!

This last week we had our second trimester screen ultrasound; this is usually scheduled anywhere between 18-22 weeks. The purpose of this ultrasound is to really look in depth at your babies growth, all the bones, heart, stomach, etc. At this point, you can see your babies hands and feet in details. Some sonographers will even point on your babies little nose. Also, if you haven’t confirmed your babies sex (that is of course if you want to know) they can do this for you during this ultrasound. Our little booger is growing exactly to date, weighing approximately 10.2 ounces and measuring about 6.5 inches which is approximately the size of a banana. 20thumbsup

19 weeks pregos!

How far along? 19 weeks and 2 days
Total weight gain/loss: I’ve officially gained all the weight I lost…which means I’ve gained about 8 pounds
Maternity clothes? YES! Well I haven’t had time to go buy any, but I officially cannot wear anything expect my loose dresses and leggings. My LuluLemon yoga pants are my to go item while not at work!
Sleep: It’s getting a little more difficult to find a comfortable position when I first get in to bed but when I’m asleep, I’m fast asleep!!! Except at least two midnight bathroom breaks!
Best moment this week: Officially feeling our little girl kick!! I really wanted my husband and I to feel her kick together or at least not be stuck at work when we feel her for the first time. Over the last week I had been feeling occasional flutters, but this week when we got back from our mini BabyMoon, I had a snack and laid flat on the couch and we both just had our hands on my stomach and felt her move! It was an amazing experience and to have him feel it too made it perfect!!!
Miss Anything: My closet…its getting harder to find something to wear when nothing fits! I need to do some serious maternity shopping!
Food cravings: Anything sweet!!! I have always LOVED ice cream and now that I am pregos I catch myself having ice cream at least two times daily!
Have you started to show yet: Big time. The photos do not do justice! I feel that I went from a pooch to a huge bump over the last few weeks.
Symptoms: Nausea and vomiting are completely resolved!!! I have a lot of reflux, but I had reflux before becoming pregnant so now it is just worse.
Looking forward to:  Registering!!! I’m asking around all my new mommy friends and doing my research on the perfect products to register for.

This week was a fun-filled week!!! We had our closest friends and family over for a small Fourth of July BBQ. The weather was amazing so we spent the entire day outside in the backyard grubbing away!!!! Here are a few pics we took and my husband and his friend mocking our weekly fruit photos!! At 19 weeks, our little one is as large as a mango measuring in at 6.0 inches long and weighing about 8.5 ounces.  fourth1fourth3

 

 

16 weeks pregos!

How far along: 16 weeks and 1 day
Total weight gain/loss: still down about 6.5 lbs, but trying to eat more
Maternity clothes: Not yet…but I haven’t tried much other than my scrubs and my “fat day” jeans
Sleep: Still sleeping like a baby while I’m asleep but I’ve been religiously waking up at around 4am for a bathroom break and I am still waking up a bit earlier with morning sickness…I’m starting to get used to that. I’ve learned to set my morning alarm 20 minutes earlier to give myself some time to recover.
Best moment this week: Our OB appointment…because at every appointment we get to listen to our babies heart beat
Miss Anything: Not really
Food cravings: I had my first official craving…a Jolly Rancher! Ok I know that is kind of lame, but one of the nurses at work was eating one and after smelling it I had to have one!!!
Have you started to show yet: My pooch is slowing making its way out further even more
Symptoms:  The nausea is improving somewhat….possibly it’s coming to an end???
Looking forward to:  Planning the nursery and shopping

I had a routine OB appointment last week however there is a little twist…at the visit, she told me I was actually 15 weeks not 14. So let me explain…that whole deal with the concern for an ectopic pregnancy in my early pregnancy leading to an early first trimester ultrasound led to some confusion. If calculating off my LMP (last menstrual period), I should now be 15 weeks, but when I had that early ultrasound they had told me I am one week behind. Needless to say, the dating on the ultrasound versus that of my LMP were only 6 days apart…long story short, the rule most OB’s follow is they will base your due date on the last LMP UNLESS a relatively early first trimester ultrasound is showing a different due date that is different by at least 7 days. I basically missed the cutoff by one day, which confused everyone…so now I know I am technically 16 weeks and 1 days, not 15 weeks and 2 days. This shouldn’t be a big deal right? If anything I should be excited that I have made it through one extra week, but since finding out we are one week ahead has thrown me in to a whirlwind of feeling like I am behind schedule! Whether its those hormones taking over or my OCD personality liking to be in control of everything, I’ve got a lot of nursery planning, cleaning, reorganizing, baby shower planning, baby registry, etc to plan ASAP! I’ll keep you all posted.

12 Weeks Pregos!

12weekphotoYay…we had our 12 week ultrasound. Our little baby is growing and looks more and more like a real baby! It is so surreal to think something alive and real is growing inside me. During our ultrasound, our booger was stretching out as if waking up from a deep long nap.  During your 12 week ultrasound, also known as your sequential ultrasound, most OB’s will recommend measuring the “nuchal translucency” which is the thickness behind the babies neck which can help measure the risk of Downs Syndrome. Additionally, during this period is when you complete your First Trimester Blood screen, if you choose to do so. This blood test in addition to the nuchal translucency measurement looks at the risk of various chromosomal abnormalities that your baby may be at. It is important to discuss all of your risks with your doctor and together determine if you would like to do the first trimester screening. 12weekKeyvan

The best part of the 12 week ultrasound, aside from of course knowing our baby is growing healthy and to date is that they were able to “guesstimate” the sex!!!! Yes, even as early as 12 weeks! Though most OB’s will wait until 14 weeks or even until your second trimester anatomy scan (the one between 18-20 weeks), our ultrasound technician told us the sex with 95% confidence! Stay tuned….

At 12 weeks, our baby is about the size of a plum measuring about 2.1 inches long and 0.49 ounces. As you can see in the ultrasound, at around 12 weeks, babies pretty much have all of their body parts…from this point forward all they got to do is keep growing!12weekplum12weekbelly12weekside

11 Weeks pregos!

11week4How far along? 11 weeks and 2 days
Total weight gain/loss: lost about a total of 8 pounds over the last several weeks, but thankfully gained two back so I’m still down 6 pounds from my prepregnancy weight

Maternity clothes? Not quite yet…with the weight loss my pants still fit, but I feel like they are getting a little snug in the waist, but loose around the thighs.
Sleep: Still sleeping like a baby…except I wake up a bit earlier now with morning sickness
Best moment this week: I had one nausea free day last week…for a whole day I thought the morning/night sickness was over!!! But boy was I wrong…
Miss Anything: Being able to cook without getting sick from all the scents in the kitchen. I love to spend time in the kitchen. Cooking dinner after work is my way of unwinding so I can’t wait to do it again.
Food cravings: Anything salty or carby…basically I live on Cheez-It’s, plain noodles, rice, and Gatorade
Have you started to show yet: My pelvic area feels a little more full…I’m not really showing but feel bloated
Symptoms: Still battling the nausea but like I said before, it’s partially reassuring because I know our baby is growing
Looking forward to:  Can’t wait to see your little booger at our 12 week ultrasound next week!

9 Weeks pregos!

9week2So we finally started taking some weekly pictures…or at least we are going to attempt to take pictures every two weeks…we’ll see if our schedules let us stick to the plan! Since finding out I’m pregnant, I signed up for the  Thebump.com’s pregnancy week-by-week application.  TheBump.com is a great website full of pregnancy resources and has a fun link that allows you put your pregnancy due date and then they automatically sends you weekly updates on your pregnancy with details about what is going on with your pregnancy that week, what you can expect and a fruit/vegetable equivalent of the size of your baby. It’s a fun way to put things in to perspective and makes for a fun photo prop!

This week we are 9 weeks pregnant. Our baby is the size of a green grape or olive (whichever you prefer). That means our baby is 0.9 inches and weighs about .07 ounces. At this point we can say our baby is officially a fetus and no longer just an embryo. Can’t wait for the weeks to come!9week3 9week1

6 Weeks…Nausea, Nausea and more…

How far along? 6 weeks and 4 days
Total weight gain/loss: initially lost 5.3lbs over the last two weeks but have gained two over the last few days
Maternity clothes? With the weight loss my regular clothes fit even better
Sleep: Sleeping like a baby….maybe a bit too much! I fall asleep right after work and wake up 9-10 hours later to go straight to work again!
Best moment this week: Ironically the nausea…at least I know my hormones are continuing to rise which means our little booger is healthy and growing
Miss Anything: My evening glass of vino with dinner
Food cravings: Nada. Tolerating food is a challenge at this point
Have you started to show yet: Nope. Still too early
Symptoms: As I mentioned before, I still have the ongoing nausea and occasional lower abdominal cramps. The cramping is normal. As your uterus is growing, its making space in your body. Though I’m not showing, my uterus is growing so it’s pulling on my round ligaments.
Looking forward to:  Our 12 Week ultrasound!!!

Everything has been great so far…except for the nausea which is expected (at least for most). The nausea really takes a toll on your body. Unfortunately, again like most women, my nausea does not only come in the form of morning sickness. It actually comes in spurts throughout the day. It peaks when I wake up and then dies down a bit throughout the day and the escalates around 4PM and throughout the night. Maybe my body knows I’ll be seeing my husband in a few hours and I can milk him for all his pity ;-). Along with the nausea comes an impeccable sense of smell…whether you like it or not. Unfortunately, as a result, I cannot get within five feet of my refrigerator. The combination of smells and site of food just make my stomach go wild so I have been avoiding the kitchen at all costs which is very hard for me because I’m usually the biggest foodie and I love to cook. My husband has been so supportive. He’s stocked our fridge with sparkling water and this weekend took at the refrigerator and cleaned it all out. He basically threw everything out and scrubbed it down, but unfortunately I still can’t get near it!

Over the last week, I’ve been experimenting with different things to help the nausea. Here’s what worked and didn’t work for me.  For work, I packed little snack packs of pretzel sticks. I seem to tolerate salty a lot better than sweets. I’ve been munching on those with sparkling water throughout the day. Also fruity gum seems to work wonders! People say ginger candies help with nausea; I bought some from Mother’s Market which is an organic super market nearby, but not only did those candies not help, they made the nausea ten times worse. But that doesn’t mean it won’t work for you so give it a try. Lastly, three days ago I discovered my new found love for fruit smoothies. Jamba Juice, which makes blended fruit smoothies seems to be a great source of calories and the cool smoothie helps keep the nausea in check. What helps your nausea????? pretzels
